No more 2D Disney films? Cuts in the animation hand-drawn team / ¿No más películas de Disney 2D? Cortes en el equipo de animación a mano

It appears Disney has revealed that they have no intentions of making more hand-drawn or 2D animated feature films at the moment. Not from them, or any of their associated companies, as Disney's chief executive Bob Iger declared at the company's annual shareholder's meeting.

Aparentemente, Disney ha revelado que no tiene intenciones en hacer más películas dibujadas a mano (2D) por el momento. Ni de ellos, ni de compañías asociadas, como el jefe ejecutivo de Disney Bob Iger declaró en la reunión anual de accionistas de la compañía.

The hand-drawn animation is being done mostly for television right now, and, even though they are not ruling out the possibility of a film with this technique in the future, at the moment there are none.

The intention of making a comeback with the traditional hand-drawn 2D films like The Princess and the Frog or Winnie the Pooh was not rewarded as they weren't such a hit at the box office as they had hoped, specially comparing them to CGI movies like Bolt or Tangled.

La animación a mano se está utilizando principalmente para la televisión por ahora, y, aunque no estén descartando la posibilidad de un filme con esta técnica en el futuro, por el momento no hay ninguno.

La intención de lograr un regreso con tradicionales filmes dibujados a mano 2D como La Princesa y el Sapo y Winnie Pooh no fue recompensada ya que no fueron exitosos en la taquilla como se hubiera esperado, especialmente comparándolos a películas CGI como Bolt o Enredados.

To add to this (outrageousness) sadness, there have been cuts at the studios in the 2D animators crew, and, as animator Tom Bancroft reported in his twitter account, remarkable names such as Ruben Aquino (Ursula-The Little Mermaid, Adult Simba-The Lion King), Nik Ranieri (Lumiere-Beauty and the Beast, Hades-Hercules), Alex Kupershmidt (Stitch-Lilo&Stitch, Koda-Brother Bear) and Russ Edmonds (Cody-The Rescuers Down Under, Kala-Tarzan).

Para añadir a esta (locura) tristeza, han habido reducciones del equipo de animación 2D en los estudios, y, como el animador Tom Bancroft reportó en su cuenta de twitter, nombres de importancia  como Ruben Aquino (Ursula-La Sirenita, Simba adulto-El Rey León), Nik Ranieri (Lumiere-La Bella y la Bestia, Hades-Hércules), Alex Kupershmidt (Stitch-Lilo&Stitch, Koda-Tierra de Osos) and Russ Edmonds (Cody-Bernardo y Bianca en Cangurolandia, Kala-Tarzan).

Personally, I prefer hand-drawn animation as I feel it has much more of a wow factor. I guess kids today might prefer CGI for some reason, but hand-drawn animation is not only a tradition, but a treasure, and I do hope they get to do more 2D films soon, to me, this technique is transcendental. And losing these geniuses that brought so much to us AND to the studios, is with no doubt, one of the (stupidest) saddest things. I don't think Walt would be very happy about this.

Personalmente, prefiero la animación con dibujo a mano ya que siento que tiene un factor wow. Quizás los niños de hoy prefieren el CGI por alguna razón, pero la animación a mano no es sólo una tradición, sino un tesoro, y espero que hagan películas 2D pronto, ya que para mí esta técnica es trascendental. Y el perder a estos genios que han dado tanto a nosotros Y los estudios, es, din duda, una de las cosas más (estupidas) tristes.

Marc Davis 80th Birthday / El 80o Cumplaños de Marc Davis

On March 30th 1993, almost 20 years ago, Marc and Alice Davis threw a garden party with family and friends in celebration of Marc’s 80th birthday.

Andreas Deja was one of the many Disney animators to attend, and instead of getting Marc a store-bought card, he came up with an illustration of Maleficent (one of Marc’s characters) being asked to dance by Jafar (one of the characters Andreas had animated). 

In additon, he wrote the lyrics from an old song in order to point out that Maleficent had an influence on the way he designed and animated Jafar. Simple, clear lines and shapes, resulting in a stylized design for the character. Andreas animated some great villains from the Disney Renaissance, whereas Marc did two great villains from the golden age. He was truly inspired by Marc’s work, what better way to show it than in making him this home-made card.

El 30 de Marzo de 1993, es decir, hace casi 20 años, Marc y Alice Davis fueron anfitriones de una fiesta de jardín con familia y amigos en celebración de cumpleaños número 80 de Marc.

Andreas Deja fue uno de los varios animadores de Disney en atender, y en lugar de comprarle a Marc una tarjeta en una tienda, se le ocurrió una ilustración en la que Maléfica (uno de los personajes animados por Marc) estaba siendo invitada por Jafar (uno de los personajes de Andreas) a bailar. Asimismo, escribió la letra de una antigua canción para resaltar  el hecho de que Maléfica había influenciado el modo en el él diseñó a Jafar. Líneas simples y claras, resultando en un diseño estilizado para el personaje. Andreas animó a muchos grandes villanos del Renacimiento Disney, mientras que Marc hizo a dos de las mejores villanas de la época dorada. Fue claramente inspirado por el trabajo de Marc, y qué mejor forma de mostrarlo que en haciéndole esta tarjeta hecha en casa.

Alice Davis

We all know Marc Davis' accomplishments as a Disney legend, but his wife Alice was not gonna be left out of the equation.

She worked alongside top notch artists like Mary Blair  in the Disneyland park attraction “It’s a Small World”. Blair did the color and art direction whereas Davis was in charge of the folklore patterns, the research, design and supervision of the manufacturing of the doll’s costumes.

Todos sabemos los logros de Marc Davis como una leyenda de Disney, pero su esposa Alice no iba a ser dejada fuera de la ecuación. Ella trabajó con artistas reconocidos como Mary Blair en la atracción del parque de Disneyland "It's a Small World" (Qué Pequeño el mundo es". Blair hizo la dirección de arte y color, mientras que Davis estaba a cargo de los patrones folklóricos, la investigación, diseño y supervisión de la manufactura de los disfraces de los muñecos.

Labyrinth / Laberinto

"Labyrinth" was a 1986 George Lucas, fantasy film starring Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie. In the film, Jennifer's character, Sarah, has to rescue her brother Toby from an evil goblin King, Jareth (David Bowie). To do so, she has to go through an oversized and fantastic maze. The movie has a rather Star Wars feeling.

"Laberinto" fue una película de fantasía de George Lucas de 1986, protagonizada por Jennifer Connelly y David Bowie. En el filme, el personaje de Jennifer, Sarah, tiene que rescatar a su hermano Toby de un Jareth (David Bowie), un rey Goblin malvado. Para conseguirlo, ella debe atravesar un sobredimensionado y fantástico laberinto. La película tiene una sensación de atmósfera similar a Guerra de las Galaxias.

Now that Disney has purchased Lucas Films, it appears they plan in redoing the film. The studios have announced to start working on a new fairytale film, “Labyrinth”, same title as the 1986.  The plot follows a princess who takes a dangerous journey through a magic labyrinth (big shock there) to rescue her father. So the plot is basically the same, except the girl is a princess and instead of rescueing her infant brother its her father. Disney had to do some kind of twist to it.

Ahora que Disney compró Lucas Films, parece que planean en rehacer la película. Los estudios han anunciado que empiezan a trabajar en un nuevo filme de cuentos de hadas, "Laberinto", teniendo el mismo título que en el de 1986. La historia sigue a una princesa que toma un peligroso viaje a través de un laberinto mágico (oh sorpresa) para rescatar a su padre. Así que la historia es básicamente la misma, excepto po el hecho de que la chica es una princesa y en lugar de rescatar a su pequeño hermano, es su padre. Disney le tenía que dar un cierto giro.

This fantasy film is going to be produced by Jim Whitaker and with script by Larry Brenner, and set to be released in 2016. There is no information whether it is going to be CG or a live action film.
