Milt Kahl & Marc Davis

Everybody knows that Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston were the best of friends. But they were not the only BFFs in the Nine Old Men group. Marc Davis and Milt Kahl were pretty unseparable as well.

Todos saben que Frank Thomas y Ollie Johnston eran mejores amigos. Sin embargo, no eran los únicos mejores amigos en el grupo de los "Nine Old Men". Marcd Davis y Milt Kahl eran bastante inseparables también.

They worked in many sequences, their characters alongside each other interactive, like Aurora and Prince Phillip, Cinderella and the Fairy Godmother, Roger and Anita Radcliffe with Cruella DeVil and Peter Pan with Tinkerbell, to name only some. They respected each other's work, Milt often raved about Marc's incredible abilities and artistry in general, whereas Marc admitted that his favorite animator was Milt.

Trabajaron en muchas secuencias, en las que sus personajes interactuaban juntos, como Aurora y el Príncipe Felipe, Cenicienta y la Hada Madrina, Roger y Anita con Cruella DeVil y Peter Pan con Campanita, para enumerar algunos. Ellos respetaban mucho el trabajo del otro, Milt fervientemente alardeaba de las increíbles habilidades de Marc y su arte en general, mientras que Marc admite que su animador favorito era Milt.

It didn't stop in the workplace, as they used to hang out with their wives, and the four of them would go to ball games and socialize together.

Marc's Cruella DeVil / La Cruella De Vil de Marc

Cruella De Vil was another character brought to life by the talented Marc Davis. Here I overlapped a scene drawn by Marc with the finished cell, and I cannot help but to highlight the incredible personality these two characters show in this scene.

Nanny’s determination and kind of comical, standing her ground, while Cruella, holding her cigarette doesn’t even give a damn about this little woman and expects to bid as high as she has to to get what she wants, as she has done all her life. 

The fact that you can read all of that from just one image shows the power, and the talented animation crew that was behind it.

Cruella De Vil era otro de los personajes traídos a la vida por el talentoso Marc Davis. Aquí están superpuestas una escena dibujada por Marc con la célula terminada, y no se puede dejar de resaltar la increíble personalidad  estos dos personajes muestran en esta escena.

La determinación de Nanny y cómicamente, retando y firme, mientras Cruella, sujetando su cigarro y casi ni importándole un comino esta pequeña mujer, esperando dar su oferta y conseguir lo que quiere, como ha hecho toda su vida.

El hecho de que se puede leer todo eso de una sola imagen muestra el poder y el talentoso equipo de animación tras de ella.

In the photograph, you can see Marc Davis, Milt Kahl and Ken Anderson being interviewed about 101 Dalmatians. Marc appears to be talking while Milt is ready to jump in with some insight. This was a very exciting film for the animators, as it was the first time they would see their drawings on the screen thanks to the new Xerox process.

Marc Davis 80th Birthday / El 80o Cumplaños de Marc Davis

On March 30th 1993, almost 20 years ago, Marc and Alice Davis threw a garden party with family and friends in celebration of Marc’s 80th birthday.

Andreas Deja was one of the many Disney animators to attend, and instead of getting Marc a store-bought card, he came up with an illustration of Maleficent (one of Marc’s characters) being asked to dance by Jafar (one of the characters Andreas had animated). 

In additon, he wrote the lyrics from an old song in order to point out that Maleficent had an influence on the way he designed and animated Jafar. Simple, clear lines and shapes, resulting in a stylized design for the character. Andreas animated some great villains from the Disney Renaissance, whereas Marc did two great villains from the golden age. He was truly inspired by Marc’s work, what better way to show it than in making him this home-made card.

El 30 de Marzo de 1993, es decir, hace casi 20 años, Marc y Alice Davis fueron anfitriones de una fiesta de jardín con familia y amigos en celebración de cumpleaños número 80 de Marc.

Andreas Deja fue uno de los varios animadores de Disney en atender, y en lugar de comprarle a Marc una tarjeta en una tienda, se le ocurrió una ilustración en la que Maléfica (uno de los personajes animados por Marc) estaba siendo invitada por Jafar (uno de los personajes de Andreas) a bailar. Asimismo, escribió la letra de una antigua canción para resaltar  el hecho de que Maléfica había influenciado el modo en el él diseñó a Jafar. Líneas simples y claras, resultando en un diseño estilizado para el personaje. Andreas animó a muchos grandes villanos del Renacimiento Disney, mientras que Marc hizo a dos de las mejores villanas de la época dorada. Fue claramente inspirado por el trabajo de Marc, y qué mejor forma de mostrarlo que en haciéndole esta tarjeta hecha en casa.

Alice Davis

We all know Marc Davis' accomplishments as a Disney legend, but his wife Alice was not gonna be left out of the equation.

She worked alongside top notch artists like Mary Blair  in the Disneyland park attraction “It’s a Small World”. Blair did the color and art direction whereas Davis was in charge of the folklore patterns, the research, design and supervision of the manufacturing of the doll’s costumes.

Todos sabemos los logros de Marc Davis como una leyenda de Disney, pero su esposa Alice no iba a ser dejada fuera de la ecuación. Ella trabajó con artistas reconocidos como Mary Blair en la atracción del parque de Disneyland "It's a Small World" (Qué Pequeño el mundo es". Blair hizo la dirección de arte y color, mientras que Davis estaba a cargo de los patrones folklóricos, la investigación, diseño y supervisión de la manufactura de los disfraces de los muñecos.
