No more 2D Disney films? Cuts in the animation hand-drawn team / ¿No más películas de Disney 2D?

It appears Disney has revealed that they have no intentions of making more hand-drawn or 2D animated feature films at the moment. Not from them, or any of their associated companies, as Disney's chief executive Bob Iger declared at the company's annual shareholder's meeting.
*

The hand-drawn animation is being done mostly for television right now, and, even though they are not ruling out the possibility of a film with this technique in the future, at the moment there are none.
The intention of making a comeback with the traditional hand-drawn 2D films like The Princess and the Frog or Winnie the Pooh was not rewarded as they weren't such a hit at the box office as they had hoped, specially comparing them to CGI movies like Bolt or Tangled.
*

To add to this (outrageousness) sadness, there have been cuts at the studios in the 2D animators crew, and, as animator Tom Bancroft reported in his twitter account, remarkable names such as Ruben Aquino (Ursula-The Little Mermaid, Adult Simba-The Lion King), Nik Ranieri (Lumiere-Beauty and the Beast, Hades-Hercules), Alex Kupershmidt (Stitch-Lilo&Stitch, Koda-Brother Bear) and Russ Edmonds (Cody-The Rescuers Down Under, Kala-Tarzan).
*

Personally, I prefer hand-drawn animation as I feel it has much more of a wow factor. I guess kids today might prefer CGI for some reason, but hand-drawn animation is not only a tradition, but a treasure, and I do hope they get to do more 2D films soon, to me, this technique is transcendental. And losing these geniuses that brought so much to us AND to the studios, is with no doubt, one of the (stupidest) saddest things. I don't think Walt would be very happy about this.
*

We already established that the creative crew’s intention was to create a mouth-watering world, so it actually looks like an actual world made of candy.
So why not build that candy world…. out of candy?
This came to life when Mike Gabriel asked talented (and one of my personal faves) Disney visual develoment artist Brittney Lee to build models of the Sugar Rush town square and race track out of real, sugary, sweet and teeth-rottening CANDY.
*

These models helped figure out how to make different textures of the ground. Some areas are covered with frosting, others with crumbled cookies and cocoa powder. She spent a lot of time pulling out white Neco wafers from wax paper sleeves full of assorted colors, just so she could make a candy flagstone path. This certainly established the benchmark, and resulted in a more authentic look the artists were trying to accomplish.
*

Brittney was more than excited when she received the assignment- “The day that I was painting faces on the popcorn people in King Candy’s grandstand, I was like ‘There s no better job on the planet. Nobody else is doing something as cool and silly as I am right now’”.
Even better, when John Lasseter, executive producer of the film, saw the candy faces in the grandstands, he went crazy. Coudn’t contain the excitement, and knew this film was going to be major.
They even did models of the racecars!
*

76 Years of Disney Animation / 76 Años de Animación Disney

In 1937, not only the first Disney animated feature was made (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), but also the first full-lenght animated feature film in history. Yes, as in EVER. This is how the Walt Disney Animated Classics started. Since then, other 51 have followed, not counting Disney-Pixar collaborations, Walt Disney Pictures and Touchstone pictures, amongst others. These have all accompanied us through life, growing up- This being the case of even our parents or even grandparents as well.

Thanks to the introduction of the  Buena Vista Distribution company by Walt Disney in 1953 after the release of Peter Pan to distribute his film and television productions, all of the Disney films we loved could be part of our personal collections at home. Which ones have escaped for collection or which ones have you not seen yet? Maybe planning a Disney evening to make sure your 52-films list is done is not a bad idea, if there is some time, to spare of course.
